The nature of non-profit organizations, with their special mission, distinct publics and combination of paid and volunteer staff, present a unique challenge and opportunity to managers, executive directors or board members. Their culture and organizational structure demands and encourages innovative approaches to the management of resourceful people.

This consultation will help organization volunteer and/or staff participants explore and apply a range of human resource management practices. Topics include job design, recruitment and interviewing, supervision, evaluation, recognition, termination, ethical issues and risk management. Participants will apply ethical standards established by the Canadian Administrators of Volunteer Resources (CAVR).

This consultation specifically examines:

(1) the volunteer management process from job design through to the exit interview with emphasis on the management of human resources, primarily volunteers, and

(2) the staff performance management process including the attraction, development and retention of staff and the performance management and appraisal processes.
